College hostel, shared room: packing checklist

A college hostel room is small, shared and run on rules. What the room provides varies a lot: some come with a mattress, table, chair and cupboard, others with a bare cot. Check with the hostel office first, then pack what is missing. Mark items as you pack; the list is saved in this browser.

Ask before you pack

Send these questions to the hostel office, warden or PG owner. The answers decide half of the list below.

  1. Is a mattress or pillow provided, and what size is the cot?
  2. Which appliances are allowed in rooms: kettle, iron, immersion heater, fan? Are any banned?
  3. Is there a lockable cupboard for each student, or should you bring a trunk and padlock?
  4. How does laundry work: a paid service, shared machines, or hand-washing? Where do clothes dry?
  5. Is filtered drinking water available, and when does the mess serve meals?
  6. What are the in-time and visitor rules, and how do you reach the warden?
  7. Who are the hostel’s anti-ragging committee or squad contacts?
  8. Which documents and photographs does the hostel ask for at check-in?
